Scholarly Pursuit
Although my training
from Spelman College is a B.S. in Mathematics, I have been a self-proclaimed
philosopher ever since I learned the etymological roots of Philosopher: loving
wisdom.
I am currently
pursuing an M.S. from Old Dominion University in Secondary Education (with
a Concentration in Instructional Design and Technology).
I am pursuing this degree because this program provides an excellent background
not only for enriching my current career in education, but I also believe
this program will better prepare me to explore a career in industry or
the military - if I choose to do so.
As a teacher who
is asked “when will
you ever use this in real life,” I offer the following example. I am
most interested in Situated Learning Theory – this theory focuses on
learning in an authentic context. Knowing how much many teenagers love to
play video games that simulate other situations, I would like to explore
and possibly develop a game that enhances math skills within a situated context. |
Professional Activities and History
I teach Algebra
and Calculus to high school students. Since courses, not grade level, are
the prerequisites for what I teach, my students range from ninth through
twelfth grade. I enjoy my career in education because I seek to encourage
and awaken in others the similar passion I have for learning. I find that
in my fourth year of teaching, my thirst for knowledge – and for sharing
this knowledge - has yet to wane
Background
|
With a full time
job, graduate school, and a 2-year-old son, there isn't too much of my leisure
time that isn't grabbed from intermittent engagements with the television
set. However, when time lends itself, I mostly enjoy going to the movies
and playing the piano. My short answer to "Where are you from?" is
usually Virginia (I am the typical product of a father in the military).
Why Virginia? - both of my parents are from Virginia and I have spent more
years here than any place else.
