Teaching, Professional Responsibilities and Research

Brian J. Hodson developed and teaches a course in Microcomputer Hardware Systems in Education. This course was designed to provide an overall understanding of desktop computer hardware for educators, enabling them to upgrade, troubleshoot, and repair computers in their school environment. The course is offered each semester to support the Instructional Technology program, and as a contract course for Norfolk Public Schools.

Brian’s primary role in the College, however, is technology support. As Technology Support Director, he is responsible for maintaining over 425 networked and stand-alone computers, almost three dozen networked printers, and providing direct hardware and software support to over 300 faculty and staff users. He is a member of the Instructional Technology Committee for the Darden College of Education

Professional Activities and History

Brian J. Hodson has been at Old Dominion University since January, 1992, as a student, graduate assistant, and faculty member. Starting as a student in ODU’s Military Career Transition Program (MCTP), he earned a Master of Science in Elementary Education, and was certified to teach middle school science and social studies, completing that program in August 1993. Brian then entered the Urban Studies Ph.D. Program, concentrating in Higher Education, and worked as a doctoral graduate assistant in the MCTP Office until May 1996. Hired in August 1996 as an Instructor, Brian became a Lecturer in 1997, and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in Summer, 2001.

Brian’s professional affiliations include the Virginia Society for Technology in Education (VSTE), and the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi. He holds a Merchant Marine Master’s License for steam, motor and sailing vessels of 1600-tons, Ocean service, is a CompTIA certified A+ Technician, and a Novell certified Network Administrator.

Background

Brian Hodson grew up in New York City, and attended college in New York and Utah before joining the U.S. Navy as a Seaman Recruit in 1965. He was trained in electronics, nuclear power and submarines, and qualified as a nuclear reactor operator. Brian subsequently attended North Carolina State University under a special Navy program, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, and a commission as Ensign, USN, in June 1972. Specializing in Surface Warfare, Brian served in various shipboard and shore staff assignments until his retirement as a Commander in September, 1993.

Brian’s hobbies include sailing, fishing, and computers, and he does computer consultation work as a side business, covering hardware and software on the PC platform
