Teaching, Professional Responsibilities and Research

Dr. Amy Adcock teaches courses in Instructional Design & Technology in the VTEL and online learning environments. She is currently waiting to hear the results of several grants which will allow her to continue her research in the development of multimedia learning environments and teaching effective technology integration. Research interests include user perceptions of multimedia instructional environments, how affordances of multimedia environments affect adoption of new technologies, how cognitive load affects information processing, retention and task performance and the links between cognitive psychology and instructional design.  

Professional Activities and History

Dr. Adcock recently obtained her Doctor of Education degree in Instructional Design and Technology from the University of Memphis. During her graduate studies, she worked as an adjunct instructor and research assistant. As an instructor, she taught preservice teachers how to effectively integrate technology into their curriculum. As a research assistant, she worked as part of an interdisciplinary team developing and implementing an intelligent tutoring system that teaches computer literacy and physics.

This position is Dr. Adcock’s first tenure-track appointment.

Background

Dr. Adcock grew up in Memphis, Tennessee (home of Elvis). She moved to Norfolk with her husband, daughter, cat and dog. Previous careers include analytical chemist and corporate instructional designer. Her hobbies include playing music (percussion and bass), reading and good films.
