.1 Misuse of Teacher's Time

Teacher's today have to do many things that are a waste of their professional time.

Teachers spend several years in college learning teaching skills, human development patterns, how the brain learns, how the school system works, the latest knowledge in their subject field, etc. Then, when they get work in a school, they find out how very little teaching has to do with their job. In addition to the teaching they do, they spend enormous amounts of time do security and monitoring duties, clerical duties and supervising discipline cases. None of these are jobs the teacher has trained for -- in fact they are jobs easily done by other people who do not have teaching skills. They only end up taking up the teacher's time and detracting from the quality of their preparation, teaching and marking.

According to the professor, what are some things teachers have to do that are a misuse of time? (These are things that may interfere with instructional planning, etc.)
Mrs. Luster is the department head at a well-off school. While she is department head, she is also required to teach the same number of classes as all of the other members in her department. She is also required to hold departmental meetings monthly and must provide an agenda for each member of her department. She does not have an aide, and often has to leave class to run off the agendas. Why should Mrs. Luster be allowed to have a departmental aide or assistant department chair to assist her with these little things?
