Introduction to School Practices
Review
Question
Do you think teachers
are practicing the ideal way to do things in the teaching profession?
If not, how close do you think we are to teaching in the ideal way?
School now is pretty
much opposite to the ideal in most of its elements. In other words, if
you took almost any practice in the schools today and did the opposite,
that is more likely to be the ideal than the way we are now doing it.
It's a sad thing. The reason is mainly because society has changed but
school hasn't.
There are several
major problems in school practices:
· Deciding on ideal teaching methods
· Teachers are isolated in their classrooms
· School schedules
· Individualized learning
· Parental and Teacher Accountability
· Family support for Schools
· Teacher Motivation
· The Teaching of Values
· Trial and Error

Mrs.
Copeland teaches mathematics at Lakewood High School. She goes to
her department head concerning how many students she will have to
fail this semester due to absences. Her department head says that
she has no choice but to fail all of the students that have missed
too many days because it is the accepted school policy and practice
to do so. Although most of them are failing anyway, how could Mrs.
Copeland assist those who have good grades and
extenuating circumstances? |
