How
to Set Study Goals
Goal setting is
an important component of self-regulation strategy. Here
are some guidelines for setting your study goals.
- Set realistic goals. This strategy
particularly applies to an online environment. Competent
and knowledgeable adults can have problems with even
basic computer tasks. Learning everything about the
technical know-how is not realistic for most people.
It is good enough to know the very basic skills for
doing your course work on the computer and the Internet.
- Set a long-term (for the whole semester)
goals when you start the course. The goals laid out
in the course syllabus are quite general. You can
streamline your own particular goals in reference
to the syllabus goals.
- Subdivide a long-term goal into
concrete and specific subgoals. Determine what subgoals
must be accomplished to attain your long-term goals.
Develop long-term goals (course requirements) on a
calendar, short term-goals (weekly requirements) on
your schedule or "goals" sheet, daily goals
(errands) on a "to do" list.
- Set priorities. Another important
step in goals setting is to setting up priority that
you are unfamiliar with, you have great interest in,
or you feel it is important to your career specialty.
Pick one project and focus on it. Such as “classroom
management”, “multiculturalism”,
or “brain research”.
- Stick to the goals on the daily
basis. Encourage yourself: “ I can do this.
I mean what I planned”. Always make up what
had not been done on the previous day. Never procrastinate.
- Self-monitor progress. Go back to
the completed week against the goals of the previous
week and gauge progress in your learning performance
in terms of turning in assignments on time, teacher’s
feedback, peers’ comments, and a sense of self-confidence.
- Self-evaluate capabilities at the
weekly basis. Reflect internally what progress you
have made in terms of capability. Your perception
of capability growth will strengthen self-efficacy,
which is critical for continued motivation and self-regulation.
- Seek timely help when you
have difficulties. Re-evaluate the goals and timelines.
Make necessary adjustment on your not-fitting-so-well
goals.
