How to Repel Internet Distractions


Research indicates that when student works in the Internet learning environment, there might be some distractions on student’s attention and intention. Here are some hints intended to help online students repel those distractions. Hope you could take some of the suggestions based on your own real situations and preferences.

  • Use university-designated email address (ODU email address) to submit assignments and communicate with the instructor and TAs.
  • Make a detailed Time Allocation Plan at the beginning of the semester according to the course requirement and individual working schedules. Set up fixed time for difference assignments.
  • Focus your attention on the course work during the period of time (30 minutes, one hour, two hours or three hours, according the Time Allocation Plan) set for your course works.
  • Do other non-course related web works until the intended course work has been completely finished.

Please don’t do the following after logging on the Internet at the time for purpose of doing the course work

  • Checking, writing, and answering personal emails other than course related ones.
  • Setting beep signals for email arrivals.
  • Checking news, weather and sports information.
  • Checking pop-up ads.
  • Shopping online.
  • Chatting online.
  • Launching entertaining programs while working on course work.
  • Surfing any other irrelevant web sites.
