WebDrive (the University-supported WebDAV client) tutorial
Phase
1: Defining a site in DreamWeaver
Step 1. Open DreamWeaver and locate the
“Files” pane. If the “Site” tab on the “Files” pane (see
figure 1) is not visible, see step 1.5.
Step 1.5. - If the pane
in Step 1 is not visible when you open DreamWeaver, then
locate these little arrows on the right hand side of the
screen and click the innermost one (highlighted in blue)
Step 2. - Select “Edit
sites…” from the drop-down menu. Note that other sites
that appear in the example will not appear in your DreamWeaver
installation.
Step 3. - Click on the
“New…” button (see figure 4). Please note that your “Edit
Sites” box will not have the same sites as the example.
It will likely be empty.
Phase
2: Configuring a site in DreamWeaver to work with WebDrive
IMPORTANT!
If you continue, it is assumed that you have installed
the WebDAV client, WebDrive. If you already have installed
it, start it up if need be (on a pc, go to Start
> Programs > WebDrive > WebDrive) so that you
are connected to your site.
STEP 4. Choose the advanced tab from
the Site Definition screen.
STEP 5. Set both the "Local Root Folder:"
and "Default Images Folder:" to point to a place on your
computer's hard drive where you want to store your (local)
copy of the site. This is usually drive letter C:\, but
you can click on the folder icon to the right of either
field to browse to the location.
STEP 6. Type in the full address to your
Web site, as it would appear in a browser (we've stressed
the https in times past, but here it is http only,
NOT https).
STEP 7. Click on "Remote Info" on the
left column, and the following should appear:
STEP 8. IMPORTANT!
Set "Access:" to "Local/Network" since we have our own
(secure) WebDAV connection running through WebDrive. We
do not use the WebDAV client built into DreamWeaver because
it does not support encrypted connection through https.
STEP 9. In the "Remote Folder:" box,
enter the path to your Web site's main page. In most cases,
that will be simply X:\.
STEP 10. Uncheck the box (if it is not
already) that indicates "Refresh Remote File List Automatically".
By now, you might have seen this guy pop up one or more
times:
Here's how you get rid of that error box:
STEP 11. To get rid of that "Site Map"
pop-up error, click on "Site Map Layout" on the left column.
Set the "Home Page:" blank to the area on your LOCAL computer
(i.e. this is usually somewhere on the C:\ drive, but
it is definately where ever you picked in Step 5).
STEP 13. Leave all other options as they
are, and press "OK".
STEP 14. Your site is configured to save
changes to a location on your C:\ drive (or, somewhere
on your computer), and wait until you give the signal
to upload all changed files.
