Internet terms defined
 

Application software: programs that users work with, such as word processors, desktop publishing, and spreadsheets. Application software can be installed on your machine using disks or CDs.

Browser: A program that accesses files from the Internet and displays them on a computer screen.

HTTP: short for HyperText Transfer Protocol, this is the method by which HTML documents are formatted and transmitted across the Internet.

HTML: short for HyperText Markup Language, HTML is the language that controls how Web pages are formatted and displayed.

Operating system: the main software that runs on a computer which provides interoperability of the disk drives, processor, mouse, keyboard, printers, software applications, and more. (see also systems software)

Systems software: the operating system of your computer, such as Microsoft Windows or Apple Macintosh.

URL: short for Uniform Resource Locator, the URL is the address for documents and resources on the Web. It is often referred to as address in the top bar of a Web browser. It consists of an access protocol, which is by default HTTP, and the rest which is the domain name and path to the resource on the Web server.

WebDAV: short for Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning, WebDAV is a platform-independent extension of HTTP that allows users to collaboratively manage files on Web servers.

WebDrive: Software that allows for communication to ODU web servers using the WedDAV protocol.

ODUEdit Pro: WYSIWYG software that allows for the editing of Web pages directly through a Web browser.

Web site: a collection of Web pages which usually includes a homepage and links to other associated pages.

Web software: application software that uses or interacts with the Internet. ODUEdit Pro is a Web software, but on a more basic scale so are Web browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape.

WYSIWYG: pronounced whiz-ee-wig, is short for What You See Is What You Get. ODUEdit Pro is a WYSIWYG editor, meaning that users are able to edit Web pages using a graphical interface and are able to see information on the monitor exactly as it will appear on the Web.
