FAQs & How Do I?
Why should I give to Old Dominion University?
Old Dominion University has grown with its student body, the expansion of its mission, its commitment to excellence, and the needs of its community for highly educated, technically proficient graduates in the workforce. Gifts to the University allow it to grow in ways that other funding cannot accomplish. Private gifts allow for programs that government funding does not, or cannot, support. Scholarships, special acquisitions, equipment purchases, and the creation of endowments to attract and keep top faculty are just a few of the ways private gifts enhance the quality of an Old Dominion University education. In addition, as the value of an education at Old Dominion increases, your degree also increases in value.
Can my gift really make a difference?
Yes! While it may seem as though a gift of $25 or $100 couldn't have an impact, every gift adds to the total pool of monies available to the University. Ten donors giving $100 means that a $1000 award can be made to an outstanding undergraduate. That amount makes a significant difference to the student, perhaps even the difference of staying in school or not.
Why does Old Dominion need private support when it receives public dollars from the state?
Old Dominion University receives approximately 20% of its operating funds from the Commonwealth of Virginia. The remainder comes from student tuition and fees, income from its endowment, and from individual donors.
Is my gift tax-deductible?
Yes, to the fullest extent allowed by law. Depending on the type of gift you make, you may want to consult your accountant or lawyer for additional details.
How do I make out my check?
Please make your check payable to Old Dominion University Educational Foundation. If your gift is designated for athletics, please make your check payable to the Old Dominion University Athletic Foundation. If you wish to designate your gift to a specific area, please write that information in the memo area, or include additional information on how you would like your gift designated. If you would like to charge your gift to a credit card (American Express, Visa, MasterCard), please call the Development Office at (757) 683-3090.
Are there other ways to make a gift?
Absolutely. Gifts may be tangible, such as real estate to support the Eastside Village development, a boat for the sailing team, rare books for Special Collections, or equipment for laboratories. In addition, gifts of appreciated securities, insurance, trusts, and estate bequests can be made to support Old Dominion University. For more information on these options, please contact Maggie Libby at 757-683-4524.
