Mukkamala Is New Associate Dean for College of Sciences

Ravi Mukkamala, Old Dominion University professor of computer science and graduate program director for the master's program in the Department of Computer Science, has been appointed an associate dean in the ODU College of Sciences.

Mukkamala joined ODU as a faculty member in 1987. His Ph.D. in computer science is from the University of Iowa and he also earned a master's in business administration from ODU in 1993.

Current research interests of the new associate dean include computer security, privacy, data mining and modeling. He has published extensively, with more than 175 research papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings. Mukkamala has been awarded support of more than $3 million in research grants as a principal investigator or co-PI from agencies including NASA, as well as Jefferson Lab and private industries.

He received a Most Inspirational Faculty Award from ODU in 1994. He has won several best paper awards at national and international conferences over the years. He has supervised more than 70 doctoral dissertations and master's theses.

"We are very fortunate to have a colleague of Dr. Mukkamala's stature, who has distinguished himself in the classroom and in research, to serve as our new associate dean," said Chris Platsoucas, dean of the College of Sciences, in making the announcement of the appointment.

Mukkamala's service to his profession has included membership on the executive committee of the IEEE Technical Committee on Operating Systems. He also has served as a conference chair or invited panel member for several national and international conferences and workshops.

His responsibilities as an associate dean will include, among others: working with the dean, the college's department chairs and the faculty to increase research and research grant support; providing leadership in the submission of research grant applications; and addressing issues related to the graduate programs of the college, including recruitment and retention of graduate students.

Mukkamala succeeds Chris Osgood, who has decided to return to teaching and research on a full-time basis in the Department of Biological Sciences. "I have enjoyed working with Chris over the last five years, and I would like to express my sincere thanks for his dedication to and efforts on behalf of the college," Platsoucas said.

Terri Mathews, the college's other associate dean, was appointed to her post in 2011.
