Public Service Week Still on the CBPA Agenda

In its three years of existence, Public Service Week has carved out a niche on the Old Dominion University campus, providing unique programming and well-regarded guest speakers in a week of programming that aims to embrace ODU's mission as a metropolitan university with a community focus.

The annual event wasn't held in its usual late October/early November time slot because of scheduling conflicts. But Public Service Week will be back, better than ever, the week of February 3-7.

"We're thrilled to be sponsoring Public Service Week at ODU for the fourth time," said John Morris, professor in the Department of Urban Studies and Public Administration in the College of Business and Public Administration (CBPA), and director of Public Service Week.

"There is a real need in this region and this country for a talented, dedicated public service. Public Service Week and the undergraduate minor in public service at Old Dominion University have been created to help address that need, by making students in every ODU college aware of the career possibilities that potentially await in public service."

During Public Service Week 2014, Suzanne Puryear, president of The Planning Council, will deliver the Landmark Executive-in-Residence address. The event also includes the presentation of the CBPA's annual Achievement in Public Service Award.

Other events planned for the week include an academic guest speaker with a public service interest, a service learning event led by ENACTUS, the social entrepreneurial club in the CBPA, and a public service career event.

Public Service Week, launched as a response to President Barack Obama's 2009 "call to service," which he issued when taking office, involves many academic departments and organizations at ODU. Its goal is to shine a spotlight on the need for community engagement and the opportunities that exist to help improve our communities.

Events and activities of Public Service Week are sponsored by the CBPA, the Department of Urban Studies and Public Administration, the Career Management Center, the Alumni Association, the doctoral public administration student group PAUPers and the MPA Association.
