Big Blue Joins Foodbank’s ‘Go Orange’ Campaign to Fight Hunger
September 11, 2012
To members of the Old Dominion University community walking by the Monarch Fountain on Kaufman Mall this month -- don't be alarmed at the orange hue to the lights after dark. That and other initiatives on campus are part of Hunger Action Month.
ODU has joined the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia's "Go Orange" campaign, and the university's Center for Service and Civic Engagement (CSCE) is attempting to paint the campus orange.
"This is the first year we are involved in this campaign and we couldn't be more excited," said Tami Park-Farinholt, CSCE director. "Hunger affects many people in southeastern Virginia, and it's a natural fit for the growing culture of service and civic engagement among our students, staff and faculty to help."
Here's how:
- Donate food - Starting on Monday, Sept. 10, ODU donation bins will be located throughout campus. Drop off food in the bins, or anytime in the CSCE (1063 Webb Center);
- Collect food at your events - Do you have an event in September? Encourage your participants to bring a non-perishable item to donate. The office or student organization that collects the most food at an event will win a pizza party;
- Wear orange on Thursdays - Show your support by sporting orange on all Thursdays in September. Don't have orange clothing? Stop by the CSCE and grab an orange "Spotlight on Hunger" button for $1 (all proceeds will go to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia);
- Stomp out Hunger and Campbell - Join us for Empty Bowls on Kaufman Mall on Sept. 13 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. as we not only fill empty bowls, but also show our support of ODU football team's Sept. 15 game against Campbell University. Donate a can of soup or donate $1 to the soup kitchen to be entered to win prizes.
Paint the Campus Orange Campaign and Empty Bowls are programs of CSCE a component of the Office of Student Activities and Leadership, with support from the Office of Community Engagement and the Student Government Association. For more information contact us at volunteer@odu.edu or 683-6948.
