There is an epidemic of obesity and diabetes that is causing a major cost to the patients and health care system. Key unmet needs include high risk of cardiovascular disease and major loss of beta cell function and mass. It is clear that chronic inflammation is a major cause for these disorders but exact pathways and targets have not yet been clarified. We have ongoing studies that indicate that the 12-Lipoxygenase and downstream IL-12/STAT4 pathways are important. We have developed mouse models and small molecule inhibitors to test this hypothesis. These areas will be discussed at the seminar.
