Research using Lasers

The University has a Laser Safety Officer who oversees the conduct of the Laser Safety Program and establishes policies and procedures for the control of laser hazards. The Laser Safety Officer ensures that research involving the use of lasers is conducted in accordance with generally accepted industry safety standards. Researchers wishing to use high powered lasers must get the approval of the Laser Safety Officer prior to using the laser.

The University's Laser Safety Manual outlines the approval process for new users of lasers, and provides procedures for amending an existing approval. The Manual also defines the University's expectations for each user of lasers with regard to safe work practices, medical surveillance, training, administrative and engineering controls, and individual responsibilities.
