Mission
Veterans Affairs Services was established to provide specialized customer service to members of the various branches of military service, veterans, and their eligible dependents. Specifically, the staff serves as advocates for students by providing information about the University and assisting with Veteran's Administration (VA) programs and certification. The VA Certifying Official for Old Dominion University acts as liaison between the University and the regional VA offices to provide information on University procedures, and to resolve problems regarding eligibility and payment of VA benefits.

The Veterans Affairs Services staff assists military-connected personnel at:

  • the main campus, Norfolk, Virginia
  • military bases and ships
  • distance learning sites
  • overseas military bases
  • Asynchronous MEM students using G.I. Bill benefits

Veterans who would like information about using G.I. Bill benefits while attending Old Dominion University should call (757) 683-4425 (distance learning students should contact their site director), or e-mail vaservices@odu.edu.

Students taking classes at Old Dominion University distance learning sites in Virginia or through the EMSE program can contact Veterans Affairs Services for assistance with G.I. Bill benefits. Students attending out of state distance learning sites will have the G.I. Bill benefits certified by their site director.

Verification of Enrollment
Students collecting G.I. Bill benefits under Chapter 30 or 1606 (Reserves) must verify their enrollment status to the VA on the last calendar day of every month. The telephone number to call is (877) 823-2378, or report via the G.I. Bill web site (www.gibill.va.gov).

Department of Veterans Affairs Forms
All VA forms can be found on the VA website.

Veterans Clearance Form
Students who are using G.I. Bill benefits for the first time at Old Dominion University, active duty, and Vocational Rehabilitation (VocRehab) students, must contact the Veterans Affairs Services staff or meet with the site director to ensure that the proper paperwork has been done. For convenience, the Veterans Clearance Form is available online and can be faxed to (757) 683-5357 or provided to the distance learning site staff. Continuing students using G.I. Bill benefits must complete the Veterans Clearance Form EACH semester AFTER registering for ODU classes.

Students who wish to use both Tuition Assistance and G.I. Bill benefits during the same semester (not for the same classes) must notify the site director or Veterans Affairs Services staff in writing, or e-mail vaservices@odu.edu, or fax a copy of the Veterans Clearance Form and the Tuition Assistance Authorization Form to (757) 683-5357, indicating the classes to be submitted for G.I. Bill benefits.
