This page is designed for incoming exchange students from Old Dominion University's exchange partner universities. Students should contact their home school for information on being nominated to attend Old Dominion University as an exchange student. The information provided below is for students who have been accepted to study on exchange at Old Dominion University.
Pre-Registration for Fall 2008 (August) Classes To secure you a place in as many of your preferred classes as possible, we hope to be able to offer you an opportunity to preregister for your fall semester courses. Follow these steps for preregistration:
1. If you haven't done so already, consult with your academic adviser at your home university to determine which Old Dominion classes/modules/subjects will be appropriate for your degree program at home. If you do not have access to a current printed ODU catalog, it is available on the university's website. The catalog provides a description of all classes, while the course schedule tells you which classes are actually being offered each term. You need to look at both in order to make your selections.
2. Use the Fall 2008 semester class schedule, available through the ODU website/ Leo Online to identify the classes of interest to you that are offered this coming term. If you are admitted as an undergraduate student you need to reach an academic credit semester total of 12 credits, typically four 3-credit classes. If you are admitted as a graduate student you should be seeking a total of 9 credits, typically three 3-credit classes. You must register for 12 credits (undergraduate) or 9 credits (graduate) in order to meet the terms of your status as an exchange visitor visa holder in the U.S.
Note that course numbers indicate the level of the class: Courses numbered 100-299 are lower division (1st & 2nd year) undergraduate classes; 300-499 are upper division (3rd & 4th year) undergraduate classes. Only students admitted at the graduate level may register for courses numbered 500-799.
3. Make a list of the Fall 2008 semester classes you wish to register for. We recommend that you try to select at least three "backup" classes in addition to your first three or four choices. Organize your list in order of priority, with the first class listed the one most important to you, the last the least important.
Note that classes which indicate location at the "Virginia Beach Higher Education Center," abbreviated "VBCTR," or the "Peninsula Center,"abbreviated "PNCTR," do not meet on the main campus in Norfolk, but at centers located at some distance from the main campus and only accessible by automobile. Please do not select these classes unless you plan to purchase an automobile here!
4. Send me your list of classes by email (mdean@odu.edu) or fax (757-683-5196), along with information on the best way to reach you (email preferably) between now and August (early requests give you a better chance at successfully preregistering for more classes). Classes on your list must include the "call number"/CRN, department designation and course number as well as the course title. Example: 11167 MKTG 404 Sales Management. We cannot process your request without all of this information so please be sure to include it or we won't be able to register you.
We will communicate with you concerning any questions or concerns we have about your choices and will let you know when and if we have succeeded in getting your registration started or completed. If we are unable to reach you before your departure from your home or university, we will give you the information we have upon your arrival here.
Because we must serve a number of exchange students, we will only attempt to complete one or two initial registrations for you. Any subsequent changes in your schedule can be made by you in person after your arrival. (Classes may be dropped or added through at least September 5th without special permission).
For your information, September 1 is Labor Day (no classes held), October 11 - 14 is Fall Break holiday (no classes held), and November 26 - 30 is Thanksgiving Day holiday (no classes held). Housing will be provided through Friday, December 12th. We look forward to seeing you in August!
