FACULTY- LED PROGRAMS
Summer 2007

Cultural Geography

Peru and Bolivia, with their diversity of landscapes and wealth of archeological treasures, provide excellent settings for the study of cultural geography. We arrive in the historic center of Lima, and then transfer to Lake Sandoval in the Amazon. We canoe the marshes, searching for wildlife such as red-bellied macaws and giant otters, and visit a native Amazonia village to learn how the Brazil nut is collected and commercialized. Next we travel to Cusco and visit Inca archaeological sites, including a temple where the mummification of the Inca people took place. We hike along part of the Inca trail in the Sacred Valley and see the sunrise on our way up to the famous Machu Picchu. From the Gate of the Sun, we have a spectacular view of the valley below.
Next we observe wonderful sceneries of the Andean landscapes and drive past llama and alpaca ranches as we travel over the Altiplano Plateau. We sail on Lake Titicaca via tortora reed boats to the floating Uros islands and spend a night with a family on Antamani island. In La Paz, Bolivia, we visit the Plaza Murillo, the seat of the Bolivian Congress, and travel out to Moon Valley, a deserted area shaped by the wind to look like the moon. We also explore Tiahuanaco temple, believed to have been built by the ancestors of the Incas, and the Sillustani Inca cemetery before returning to Lima.
*Students must register and pay for GEOG 495 (summer registration) in order to participate in this program.
