FACULTY- LED PROGRAMS

Summer 2010

History and Development of Western European Ports

This course examines the influence of the port industry on the economic and cultural development of some of the great port cities of northwestern Europe from medieval times to present. The program includes visits to the ports of Antwerp, Amsterdam Copenhagen, and Rotterdam. Students will tour these key ports, as well as related historical port areas, receive lectures on the history and the present of the ports and learn how the port shaped the culture and economy of these cities, as well as how they adjusted themselves to the requirements of international trade during the past centuries.

In addition to the port tours, students will visit important historical vessels like Bremen Cog from 1380; will tour the national maritime museums of the Netherlands and Germany, will learn about emigration from Europe via Bremerhaven to the USA, and finally will have the opportunity to see the political structure of the European Union, view the works of the great Dutch painters, visit Bruges - "the Venice of the North", and explore other cultural sites in these historic cities.

*Students must register and pay for MGMT 463/563, ECON 495/595, INBU 463, PORT 695, or HIST 495/595(summer registration) in order to participate in this program.
