FACULTY- LED PROGRAMS
Summer 2010

Commerce & Culture: Rio, Salvador & Bahia

This course is designed for undergraduate and graduate students as an introduction to the geographic and cultural riches of Brazil. We will start in
Rio de Janeiro, one of the most fabulous cities in the world. Known for its carnival and stunning beaches, it is also an important port and center of media. The group will view the breathtaking vista from the foot of the statue of Christ the Redeemer. The districts of Copacabana and Ipanema are justly known worldwide. The music styles of samba and bossa nova are famous exports of the cariocas (natives of Rio).
The group will move south to Salvador, the old colonial capital of Brazil founded in 1501. Salvador contains the Pelourinho district, which has been recognized by the United Nations as a world cultural resource. The group will see performances of such world-known blocos (music groups) as Olodum, which have important economic and social roles in the Bahian Community. Bahia means "bay" in Portuguese, and the Brazilian state of Bahia, like Hampton Roads, has one of the world's great natural ports and beautiful beaches. The course will provide perspectives on commerce such as trade tourism, manufacturing, retail, distribution and agri-business. The university system, governmental structures and social services have striking differences and interesting similarities to our own.
*Students must register and pay for IT 495/595, MGMT 463/563, or AAST 395 (summer registration) in order to participate in this program.
