Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to speak a second language?
Although there are a wide variety of programs designed to improve or take advantage of your second language skills, there are also many programs offered in English. Australia and the United Kingdom have traditionally been popular choices for students, but opportunities also exist in many countries where English is not the primary language. Students can take some or all of their courses in English in Denmark, Finland, Ghana, Japan, Korea, Malta, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Sweden, Thailand, and more!

Am I eligible to study abroad?
Students from all academic majors are encouraged to study abroad. Applicants should meet the following criteria:

• At least sophomore status during the proposed study abroad term (24 credits completed). *
• Minimum 2.5 grade point average. **
• If you are a transfer student, you should complete at least one full-time semester at Old dominion before studying abroad. Students may be eligible for Spring Break programs as soon as their first year. Check with the Office of Study Abroad to see if you are eligible. *
• Certain programs have higher standards. If you do not meet these standards, you should still discuss your interests with the Study Abroad Advisor, as exceptions can be made under some circumstances. **

How much will it cost?
Cost will vary depending upon the type of program, location, and duration. Semester and year-long exchange programs cost little more than staying on campus. For some programs, travel grants and scholarships are available. The Office of Study Abroad provides sample budgets to assist you in the decision-making process. All financial aid except college work-study will travel with you for an approved program.

What are the awards available?
Dean's Education Abroad Awards provide financial support to study abroad students based on merit (minimum g.p.a. of 2.5). Additional study abroad scholarships are available for specific programs or for study in specific regions. The Jane L. and Robert H. Weiner Scholarship, for example, supports an exchange student studying at a partner university in the "developing world", while Freeman Awards support students studying in Asia, and Fulbright and NSEP programs fund advanced students for study in a number of countries and regions. In addition, regular student financial aid (with the exception of college work-study funds) applies to students studying on approved programs.

Can I earn credit for study abroad?
YES!!! All students who study abroad obtain course approvals before they depart. Individual academic departments at Old Dominion determine exactly which courses taken abroad can be approved for transfer credit, and whether the courses fulfill major, minor, or other requirements. Courses which are pre-approved for study abroad will transfer back to Old Dominion as long as you earn the equivalent of a "C" or better.

Will I fall behind in my academic program?
Not if you chooses your program carefully! Programs exist which are appropriate for all academic majors, and study abroad can also be a good way to fulfill some general education requirements. Most student who study abroad transfer back a full load of credits toward their degree.

When should I study abroad?
Although students often choose to study abroad during their junior (third) year, other time frames can be perfectly appropriate! You should meet with your academic advisor and with the Study Abroad Advisor to determine the best time for you to study abroad. It is never too early to begin planning!
