INTERNATIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION LEADERSHIP (MsEd Track)

A new track in International Higher Education Leadership (IHEL) is offered at Old Dominion University as part of the master's degree program in higher education for those seeking positions as administrators in international education programs, international admissions, international student services, study abroad and related administrative positions in universities and other post-secondary institutions.

The IHEL track in ODU's master's program in Higher Education Administration is the first of its kind in the Commonwealth of Virginia and a collaboration among the Darden College of Education, the College of Arts and Letters and the Office of International Programs. The program provides education, training and professional certification in a rapidly expanding field within higher education, both in the US and abroad.

Admission
Applicants for Admission to the IHEL Track in the higher education program must meet/submit the following to the office of Graduate Admissions for consideration for admission to IHEL:

  • Undergraduate GPA of 2.8 (3.0 in the major)
  • Two letters of recommendation (faculty and/or supervisor)
  • One-page essay on reasons for applying to the IHEL Track in the higher education program
  • Acceptable score on GRE or Miller Analogies Test; for non-native speakers of English, TOEFL score of 570 (230) or an appropriate score on the verbal section of the GRE exam and an appropriate score on the SPEAK test of spoken English

Proficiency Requirements
These may be met in the course of the M.S. Ed. Program:

  1. Foreign Language Proficiency: Oral proficiency at the 2.0 ACTFL level ("intermediate-high") in any foreign language. This requirement may be met by a proficiency exam conducted by an ACTFL-trained professional or by completing six hours at the 300/400 level with a GPA of 3.0 or above in courses taken in the third year of language study and including an abroad experience in a country speaking the target language. Native speakers of languages other than English may request a waiver of this requirement.
  2. Global Mobility Proficiency: This may be satisfied by previous experience living/working/studying abroad or by taking an internship or required course abroad.

Internship Experience - HIED 668 A, B (6 credits):

  • Two internships in one or more of the units of the Office of International Programs, in a comparable office at another US university or abroad in a foreign university or accredited international education provider. The internship should be chosen in close consultation with the program advisor and apply to the cognate field.

Total = 42 credit hours (36 course hours; 6 hours internship)
