EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
Old Dominion University provides unique opportunities for faculty, staff, students, and the Hampton Roads community at large. As an international university with ties throughout the community and beyond, ODU is positioned to play a leading role in forging new relationships through research and international study. In this effort, the Office of International Programs works closely with all colleges across the university, as well as with the leading international businesses and organizations in the greater community. Thanks to an internationally active faculty, students here have the opportunity to participate in wonderful research projects and exchange programs of amazing breadth.
ODU faculty have received national and international recognition for their various contributions. The presence of over 1000 international students and 100 international scholars on campus from approximately 100 different countries adds tremendously to the rich diversity of the student body. We recognize the importance of international education by emphasizing in the university mission the university's role to serve as "the state's gateway to the rest of the world and the world's gateway to Virginia…."
International education should never be considered an extra, but rather an integral part of any student's comprehensive education. Any student who graduates without an understanding of other cultures and societies will find it difficult to excel in any environment. Aside from the recognized fact that business is truly an international concern and that even small companies in seemingly isolated areas depend upon international ties and connections to succeed, the United States is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. Old Dominion and the Hampton Roads community reflect this remarkable range of cultures.
I know from personal experience that living and working overseas can be a life-changing event. Nothing can compare to being in a culture very different from the one in which you grew up, and having the opportunity to compare your values and ideals with those of people raised in a completely different society.
If you are a student considering attending ODU, we hope you will give serious consideration to the wonderful opportunities to study and learn in this vibrant community. If you are a faculty member, we welcome your ideas and suggestions for strengthening our international connections and research. If you are a member of the Hampton Roads community, we look forward to working with you in developing ties and creating opportunities that will help build an even stronger international community.
Please feel free to contact me if I can be of assistance.
