Modern Thinking...
Modern Thinking... Growing Educators in Virginia's Farmlands

Learning the modern way – the ODU way – isn’t one-dimensional. It sparks your imagination, taps all of your senses, and makes use of today’s technologies.

Sowing Educational Leaders Karen Crum and Steve Myran, assistant professors of educational leadership and counseling, were awarded one of only 22 national school leadership grants from the U.S. Department of Education for a collaborative project that could revolutionize the way educator leadership is nurtured in far-flung locations. The pair created a tailored, accelerated master's of education program for potential leaders among the ranks of Northampton, Va., County Public Schools educators, while they continue to work in Northampton County.

Math, Naturally Rainbows, clouds, spiderwebs…no matter where you look, everything you see can be explained mathematically, according to math Professor John Adam, one of ODU’s 25 State Council of Higher Education Outstanding Faculty Award winners. Adam brings a challenging subject to life, literally, for the hundreds of students who pack his classes each year.

Folk Stories As curator of Old Dominion University’s Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries, Ramona Austin stewards an unparalelled collection of self-taught art and has the ability to bring each and every piece alive for students, faculty, staff and community members, alike. Housed in a dedicated gallery, the Gordon Self-Taught Art Collection is a donation of approximately 350 works in all media by many of America's leading self-taught artists. It features paintings, sculptures, jugs, canes and carvings, among other items.

Executive Education Students in ODU’s College of Business and Public Administration learn from some of the country’s sharpest business minds through the Landmark Executive-in-Residence Series. Recent speakers have included David Goode, retired chairman, president and CEO of Norfolk Southern Corp.; David Callahan, author of "The Cheating Culture: Why More Americans Are Doing Wrong to Get Ahead;" Bethany McLean, the Fortune reporter who uncovered the Enron scandal; retired Navy Adm. William Fallon, whose 40-year career included time as vice chief of naval operations and commander of Central Command; and Gregory Lumsden, a former chief financial officer in Countrywide Financial Corporation.

Outstanding 25 Old Dominion University professors have received Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award winners from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. The award recognizes excellence in teaching as well as significant contributions in research and service. ODU has received more Outstanding Faculty Awards than any other Virginia college or university except one since 1991.
