Appointments/Elections
WILLIAM H. GRAVES, dean of the Darden College of Education, appointed to a three-year term on the Advisory Board on Teacher Education and Licensure of the Virginia Department of Education.

JOHN RITZ, chair and graduate program director of occupational and technical studies, appointed to a three-year term on the Technology Education Advisory Council of the International Technology Education Association.

CHERYL T. SAMUELS, dean of the College of Health Sciences, elected secretary-treasurer of the Eastern Virginia Health Systems Agency Inc. board. It is the regional board that reviews requests from hospitals in the area for certificate of need approval for new or expanded facilities.

Awards
TOM FEIST, a Web developer for the Office of Institutional Advancement, won first and second place in a photo contest sponsored by the Virginia Zoo.

JIM JARRETT, director of athletics, selected as the 2002-03 Division I-AA/I-AAA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year by the National Association of College Directors of Athletics.

BRIAN K. PAYNE and RANDY R. GAINEY, associate professors of sociology and criminal justice, a $22,000 award from the Alzheimer’s and Related Diseases Research Award Fund, established by the Virginia General Assembly, for their study, “The Social Context of Providing Care to Alzheimer’s Patients: Specifying Interactions Between Social Disorganization, Service Utilization, Burden and Mistreatment.” (Partial support for this project was provided by a generous contribution to the ARDRAF from the Alzheimer’s Association’s Greater Richmond chapter.)

MURRAY RUDISILL, head golf coach, named Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year.

WILLIAM R. PETERSON, assistant professor of engineering management and systems engineering, the Merl Baker Award by the Engineering Management Division of the American Society for Engineering Education.

HAROLD S. WILSON, associate professor of history, honorable mention for the 2003 Peter Seaborg Award for Civil War Scholarship in recognition of his book “Confederate Industry: Manufacturers and Quartermasters in the Civil War.”

Book Translation
M. LEE MANNING, eminent scholar, and KATHERINE T. BUCHER, professor, educational curriculum and instruction, “Classroom Management: Models, Applications and Cases” (Merrill/Prentice-Hall, 2003), has been translated into Chinese and will be marketed to practicing teachers and institutions of higher education in Taiwan.

XINYUN GUO and ADAM PRZEKOP, doctoral candidates, and CHUH MEI, eminent scholar, aerospace engineering, “Thermal Buckling Suppression of Composite Laminates Using Shape Memory Alloy for Supersonic Vehicle Applications” at the Fifth International Congress on Thermal Stresses at Virginia Tech. The paper was published in the proceedings. Mei also served on the congress program committee and chaired the technical session on “Anisotropic Thermomechanical Problems.”
