On Sept. 13, from 3-5 p.m., the Institutional Advancement Committee will meet in the York/Potomac River Room, while the Student Affairs Committee will meet in the James/Lynnhaven River Room. These sessions will be followed by a board reunion dinner at 7 p.m. on the Williamsburg Lawn.

On Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon, the Academic Affairs Committee will meet in the James/Lynnhaven River Room, while the Administration and Finance Committee will meet in the York/Potomac River Room.

Also on Sept. 14, a plenary session on enrollment and retention issues is scheduled for 1-2:30 p.m., followed by the full board meeting at 2:45, both in the Webb Center Board Room.


Glenda Humphreys slated as HACE meeting speaker
Glenda Humphreys, director of human resources, will be guest speaker for the Tuesday, Sept. 18, general meeting of the Hourly and Classified Employees Association. She will address a variety of issues of interest to university staff.

The meeting will begin at noon in room 151 of Perry Library. All classified and hourly employees are invited to attend.


Multicultural Book Club back in session Sept. 15
This month the Old Dominion Multicultural Student Services Book Club will feature David Lamb's "Do Platanos Go Wit' Collard Greens?" The club will meet from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, in the Hampton/Newport News Room of Webb Center.

The club meets monthly to read a book focusing on a specific cultural group. This meeting will also serve as the kickoff for Old Dominion's Hispanic Heritage Month events.

Lamb's debut novel takes the reader on a cultural journey through New York City's ethnic and racial politics and shows how these politics impact today's hip-hop culture. Lamb will be on hand to discuss his book and the Latino-Black relationship.

Governor appoints two to Board of Visitors
Gov. Jim Gilmore recently announced the appointment of two new members to four-year terms on the Board of Visitors: John P. "Jack" Cousins and Scott D. Pattison.

A class "A"general contractor, Cousins has 26 years' experience in the construction industry. He is the owner of Cousins Construction Co. Inc./Cousins Industries in Portsmouth.

Cousins studied political science at Old Dominion and commercial art at the Ringling School of Art. He was appointed to the Board of Contractors in 1998 and is a current member of the Virginia Beach Republican City Committee.

Pattison recently began serving as executive director of the National Association of State Budget Officers in Washington, D.C. NASBO is a nonprofit, nonpartisan research and educational organization through which the states share fiscal data and collectively advance state budget practices. He previously was director of the Virginia Department of Planning and Budget, where he served as counsel to the attorney general and handled fiscal, budget and financial issues.

Pattison also teaches a course in political science as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Richmond. He is a 1984 graduate of George Washington University and received his law degree in 1987 from the University of Virginia.

The new members succeed Edward L. Hamm Jr., who was not reappointed, and Patricia W. Perry, who did not seek reappointment. The governor also reappointed Mary Haddad and William E. Russell to four-year terms on the board.


"Parents, Children and Divorce" is seminar topic
The Darden College of Education's Center for Professional and Personal Development will offer a seminar on "Parents, Children and Divorce" from 6-10 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Lions Child Study Center. The cost is $50.

Led by Ed Neukrug, chair of educational leadership and counseling, and Katharine Kersey, chair of early childhood education, the program will teach the importance of protecting and enhancing the child's emotional development and inform parents of the legal process.

The seminar is designed as an interactive program for parents prior to a divorce being granted.

Profs' works will be on display in TCC exhibit
Works by art faculty members Anne Bousquet, David Johnson and Robert McCullough will be among those displayed in the "Pixels: Contemporary Photography and the Computer" exhibition at the Visual Arts Center of Tidewater Community College, 340 High St., Portsmouth.

The opening is set for 8 p.m. Sept. 15.


DMV mobile unit arrives on campus Sept. 18
The Department of Motor Vehicles' mobile unit will be on campus from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18.

Offering all DMV services, the unit will be located in the Powhatan Parking Lot at 44th Street and Powhatan Avenue.


Norfolk Chamber Consort to perform Sept. 10
The Norfolk Chamber Consort will present a concert titled "Prize Winners" at 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, in Chandler Recital Hall of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.

Part of the Diehn Residency Series, the program features violinist Joanna Betz, winner of the first Consort Chamber Music Prize.

Penicheiro selected to All-WNBA second team
Sacramento Monarchs point guard Ticha Penicheiro '98, who led the league in assists at 7.5 per game and ranked 10th in steals, was selected to the All-WNBA second team.

Adrienne Goodson '88 of the Utah Starzz ranked 18th in the WNBA in scoring (12.3) and 12th in double-doubles.

Under coach Anne Donovan '83, Clarisse Machanguana '97 helped her Charlotte Sting squad reach the WNBA finals. She averaged 5.4 points and 4.0 rebounds for the season.

Mery Andrade '99 of the Cleveland Rockers helped her team to the Eastern Conference regular-season title, averaging 4.8 points and 3.1 assists.
