Symposium to commemorate 50th anniversary of the Korean War

Veterans and military historians from around the world will gather on campus June 26-27 for an international symposium commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Korean War.

Sponsored by Old Dominion, the Gen. Douglas MacArthur Foundation and the City of Norfolk, "Understanding and Remembering: 50th Anniversary of the Korean War" will examine the impact the war made on the people of Korea and the thousands of armed services personnel from the 21 nations involved in the conflict.

Retired four-star Gen. Frederick "Fritz" J. Kroesen, who saw action in World War II, Korea and Vietnam during his 40-year Army career, will deliver the symposium's keynote address at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 26.

Korea's first four-star general, Sun Yup Paik, will be the speaker at an 11:30 a.m. luncheon Wednesday.

Panel topics for the two-day event include:

- Background on Korea and the War;

- Strategic Coalitions;

- Conduct of the War: Ground Operations;

- Conduct of the War: Air Operations;

- The Truman-MacArthur Controversy;

- Legacies of the Korean War; and

- Veterans Remember.

The symposium costs $25 and includes continental breakfast and lunch both days. Registration is required and is limited to 500 participants.
