Outstanding Scholars are honored

Seven Old Dominion graduates were recognized as Outstanding Scholars during the Student Honors and Awards Banquet May 9 and at their college commencement ceremonies May 11.

Lien Thi Phan of Hampton, a biological sciences and psychology major, was named the overall Outstanding Scholar. A graduate of Bethel High School, Phan plans to attend medical school in August.

At the banquet, Old Dominion's top graduates were presented trophies as recipients of the Alumni Association Outstanding Scholar Awards, given to the graduating senior with the highest grade point average from each college.

University faculty members and administrators who most inspired the award recipients also were honored at the banquet.

The top scholars, their majors and grade point averages, and their inspirational faculty members are:

- Arts and Letters - Terri R. Provost of Virginia Beach, English, 4.0; Jeffrey Richards, professor of English.

- Business and Public Administration - Deborah deSola Southerland of Virginia Beach, information technology, 4.0; William Crouch, associate professor of decision sciences.

- Education - Rodney A. McDaniel of Virginia Beach, occupational and technical studies, 3.96; Walter Deal, associate professor of occupational and technical studies.

- Engineering and Technology - Jeen S. Clemitson of Virginia Beach, environmental engineering, 3.99; Gary Schafran, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering.

- Health Sciences - Ashley K. Gunter of Suffolk, nursing, 3.98; Martha Nesselrode, lecturer of nursing.

- Sciences - Lien Thi Phan of Hampton, biological sciences and psychology, 4.0; Ralph W. Stephens III, associate professor of biological sciences.
