Instructional Technology Teaching Award
Joel English and Kay Palmer

In his three years at Old Dominion, Joel English has made impressive contributions as an innovative teacher. This is especially true in the many creative and seamless ways he infuses his courses with technology. In 2001, he won the TELETECHNET Faculty of the Year Award.

An example of the creativity he brings to his courses is found in his fall 2001 advanced composition course on TELETECHNET. He used the Web to create a strong sense of community among his students at nearly three dozen locations. He designed the site as an integrated writing environment, which served as the gateway to all class interaction, from talking in real time to downloading class notes.

English willingly helps colleagues on an individual basis and conducts workshops for faculty.

Kay Palmer has been a member of the nursing faculty since 1979. She and the School of Nursing first embraced technology through televised classes in 1987.

Her nursing research course was initially broadcast to 33 RNs pursuing baccalaureate degrees on Virginia's Eastern Shore. With assistance from the Center for Learning Technologies, she has pioneered the use of online course syllabi, discussion groups, "real office hours" and use of the Internet for resources. Class time consists of application of content rather than traditional lectures.

Palmer also has tutored and mentored her fellow nursing faculty, encouraging them to incorporate technology into their courses. As a result of her dedication, the School of Nursing has expanded its access to registered nurses from the initial site on the Eastern Shore to 34 sites throughout Virginia and the United States.

English and Palmer will share $4,000 in funding for the purchase of hardware or software.
