The Office of Computing and Communications Services is pleased to announce the release of Internet User (IUser), a Web-based service that allows faculty, staff and students to access and manage files stored on the university's NetWare servers from any location via an Internet browser.
Individuals may access any directories/files to which they have rights, including their H:\ drive and shared departmental directories (usually the J:\ drive). They may also add links to other directories for which they have access rights. Additionally, arrangements can be made for resources to be assigned to a group, making those resources available to all group members via the IUser page.
According to Dave Hamel, assistant director for networks and desktop support, "The release of this utility addresses a long-standing need expressed by faculty and staff for remote access to files stored on the university's NetWare servers. The product was selected after extensive research, conducted by senior systems engineer Ken Saal, based on the criteria of security, affordability and ease of use."
System requirements are Internet Explorer 4.0 or greater or Netscape Navigator 4.7 or higher. The application does not require Java applets or plug-ins.
IUser is accessed via the university Web site: from the home page, select Faculty and Staff, scroll to On-Line Resources and click on IUser. A downloadable user guide is available under the announcement header on the OCCS Web site, www.odu.edu/occs. The guide provides information on the log-in procedure, use of the product, and recommended security precautions. Individuals are strongly encouraged to read this document prior to using the application.
Several IUser training sessions have been conducted. An additional training session is scheduled for 12:30-1 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, in 104 BAL. To register for this training call 683-4503 or e-mail me at cmerrima@odu.edu.
The following are important considerations when using IUser:
- IUser provides access to Old Dominion University systems and as such, may only be used for authorized purposes. Unauthorized access to information stored on the system may result in criminal prosecution. Your usage of the system implies consent to possible monitoring/auditing.
- Logging into IUser is considered a log-in to your LAN account. Please be sure to log out of your account on your university workstation or you may be prevented from logging in to IUser (concurrent login error).
- Your ability to work with documents is limited by the software that is available on the workstation you are using. IUser does not provide access to software applications stored on your office computer or on the university servers.
- Files stored on the local hard drive (C:\ drive) of your university office computer are not accessible via IUser. To access a file remotely, you must store that file in a directory on the university NetWare server (H:\\drive or other drives to which you have rights).
- The speed with which files transfer during downloading and uploading will be affected by the type and speed of modem being used.
- Use of IUser falls under the university's "Telecommuting Security Guidelines" as detailed in the IUser Guide.
- The confidentiality of student data must be protected per the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, as detailed in the IUser Guide.
Questions regarding IUser should be directed to the OCCS Customer Service Center at 683-3192.
