The latest exhibit at the University Gallery, "I Have Come This Far - Brenda Wright - A Photographic Journey," will open with a reception at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at the gallery, 350 W. 21st, Norfolk. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
The exhibition of 100 photographs, which comprise her book of the same title, elegantly documents Wright's travels and reveals her exceptional eye.
A native of Danville, Va., and owner of the Shooting Star Gallery in Suffolk, Wright describes her book as a "travel journal," the journey beginning with her father and her upbringing in a rural three-room house without plumbing. Her 35-year photographic journey took her on travels throughout the United States and abroad.
"Like so many documentary photographers, she has taken her images from the environment around her, a trove of 'found objects' that seem endless," said Linda McGreevy, associate professor of art history.
The exhibit includes images from such U.S. cities as New Orleans, New York City, and Atlantic City, N.J., as well as such foreign locales as Bangkok, Thailand; Katmandu, Nepal; and La Gran Sabana, Venezuela.
The exhibition continues through May 5. The gallery is open noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday; noon to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. For more information call 683-2355.
