Donated magazines are put to good use

Back in January, in an effort to help a local elementary school guidance counselor with her project to put magazines in the hands of her students as an encouragement to read, President Runte sent an e-mail to faculty and staff requesting that they contribute to the cause by dropping off their used magazines at her office.

The response was overwhelming, as hundreds of magazines arrived on the second floor of Koch Hall, which were in turn passed on to Sherrill Hurwitz at Tanners Creek Elementary School in Norfolk.

Last week, President Runte received a note from Hurwitz, thanking her - and the campus community - for their contributions. Hurwitz received a variety of magazines, including Ladybug and Spider, which she said were a big hit with the children and their parents. She even received an anonymous gift subscription to Sports Illustrated.

"This was perfect timing with all of the information about the Olympic games," Hurwitz said in her note. "Please thank the person who did this."

As Runte had noted in her Jan. 14 e-mail request, "This is a small project and small gesture - but every bit helps!"
