Variety of programs planned for Women's History Month observance

"A Salute to Spirited Women" is the theme for National Women's History Month, and Old Dominion will offer a variety of speakers and programs in March for its own salute.

The following events are scheduled through March 11:

-March 4 - "Humor and Political Correctness: Are Vicious Jokes Harmless?", noon to 1 p.m., Chesapeake Room, Webb Center. Janet Bing, professor of English, will lead this workshop and group discussion of the issues raised by sexist and racist jokes, with reference to political correctness and freedom of speech.

-March 4 - "The Aztec Virgin," 6:30-8 p.m., Portsmouth Room, Webb Center. Meryl Ann Butler, a professional artist, educator and writer, will explore the mysteries of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Aztec goddess Tonantzin through myth and interactive activities.

-March 5 - "In Search of Roots," 12:30-1:30 p.m., James River Room, Webb Center. Sandra Joe-Washington, lecturer of communication and theatre arts, will offer a gentle and long-overdue look at "granny root doctors" and faith healers, especially their impact on local culture and folklore.

-March 6 - "Women, Fashion and Social Protest in Argentina," noon to 1 p.m., Chesapeake Room, Webb Center. Regina Root, assistant professor of foreign languages, will present a series of slides of 19th- and 20th-century Argentine fashions that serve as symbols of political protest.

-March 7 - "Sister Circle: Sisters of the Yam - Black Women and Self-Recovery," 4:30-6 p.m., Chesapeake Room, Webb Center. Alicia Phillips, a graduate assistant at the Women's Center, will survey the works of Bell Hooks and lead a discussion on how the development of black women is shaped by institutionalized structures and domination.

-March 8 - A reception in observance of International Women's Day, noon to 1 p.m., Chesapeake Room, Webb Center.

-March 9 - Womengineers Day (see story on page 5).

-March 11 - "The Legal Profession as Problem Solvers and Peacemakers," a President's Lecture Series address by former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno (see story on page 1).
