Filmmaker John Singleton (above) delivers the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture to a packed crowd in Webb Center Jan. 22. At age 24, Singleton became the first African American nominated for an Academy Award as best director. Columbus A. "Joe" Austin Jr. (left) was presented the university's MLK Memorial Award in recognition of his work for social justice. For many years, he has exerted a positive influence on area youth through his work with the Norfolk Recreation Bureau, the STOP Organization and Hunton YMCA.
