Umoja Conference to focus on issues facing black students

Old Dominion's first Umoja Conference, a merger of the university's Sisterhood Symposium and Black Male Summit, will take place in Webb Center Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25-26.

The event, sponsored by the Hugo A. Owens African American Cultural Center, is designed to address issues facing collegiate African Americans. "Umoja" is a Swahili word meaning unity.

The conference opens Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. with registration, followed at 6 p.m. by dinner and entertainment. The Jan. 26 program begins with a breakfast at 8 a.m., followed by workshops, a luncheon and a play, "Hooked on Love."
