"Three Thursdays in June" serves up all that jazz for its final two performances

Old Dominion's popular outdoor concert series, "Three Thursdays in June," presents its second installment June 14 when the Great American Music Ensemble visits Kaufman Mall at 7 p.m. to perform a selection of jazz tunes.

This jazz orchestra, conducted by Doug Richards, is dedicated to spirited musical performances of outstanding compositions and arrangements covering the entire scope of jazz history.

A new addition to the lineup, the Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet will give the final performance in the series at 7 p.m. June 21. The group puts its mark on vocal jazz with a distinctive brand of tight harmonies, swinging rhythms and inventive vocalise lyrics.

Backed by a rhythm section of world-class jazz instrumentalists, the quartet performs regularly in its hometown of Washington, D.C., and can be heard on jazz and National Public Radio stations across the globe.

Concert-goers are advised to bring blankets or lawn chairs to the outdoor concerts. Refreshments and picnic food will be on sale. In case of rain, concerts will be held in the University Theatre.

The concerts are free and open to the public. For more information call the music department at 683-4061.
