Distinguished professorship to honor Dwight Allen at UMass-Amherst

Dwight W. Allen, eminent professor of educational reform, will have an endowed distinguished professorship named in his honor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

The Dwight W. Allen Distinguished Professor of Educational Policy and Reform, the first endowed distinguished professorship in the School of Education at UMass, and another professorship will be endowed by a $1.7 million grant from Steve Gluckstern, a former student of Allen's.

Gluckstern's gift will be matched by state funds in the amount of $1.3 million to complete the endowment.

Allen is a former dean of the UMass School of Education and a former professor at the university. Gluckstern went on to become a school administrator, Wall Street millionaire and consultant.

Gluckstern's father, Robert, provost of UMass during Allen's time there, also will receive an endowed distinguished professorship in his name: the Robert Gluckstern Distinguished Professor of Physics.

The younger Gluckstern anonymously asked Allen to admit him to the graduate program he headed as dean. Only after Gluckstern was admitted to the program did Allen find out Gluckstern's identity and who his father is.

Entertainer Bill Cosby and writer Jack Canfield of the "Chicken Soup" series of books are also among Allen's UMass-Amherst graduates.
