Women's History Month celebration continues

Old Dominion's celebration of Women's History Month continues with a number of presentations, including talks by Old Dominion faculty and staff.

The following is a schedule of events through the end of the month. Unless noted, all events are sponsored by or in conjunction with the Women's Center, and are free and open to the public. For more information call 683-4109.

o March 23 - "Sharing the Vision: Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Writing of the Little House Books": Presented by Anita Fellman, director of Old Dominion's women's studies program, who is a scholar and author known for her work on this historical American woman whose writing has delighted generations; 3-4 p.m., Cape Charles Room, Webb Center.

o March 26 - "Women, Science and Objectivity": Roni Kingsley, associate professor of biology at the University of Richmond, will discuss the impact of science on women, and how things have changed with the increasing participation of women in science; 1-2 p.m., Portsmouth Room, Webb Center.

o March 27 - "Mother Dark and Other Dances": Second Wind Dance Company and Old Dominion dance students and faculty will present this intriguing performance illustrating the varied stories of women's lives; 12:30-1:30 p.m., 156 Diehn Center.

o March 28 - "Honoring Women's Health": Health education coordinator Phoebe Butler will help women learn how to identify and critique books, articles and Web sites that feature women's health information.; 2-3 p.m., Cape Charles Room, Webb Center.

o March 28 and 30 - SAC Movie Night: "Where the Heart Is": Abandoned by her boyfriend, pregnant teenager Novalee Nation stakes out a "home" in an Oklahoma Wal-Mart and finds a host of colorful friends willing to help her. Starring Natalie Portman, Ashley Judd, Stockard Channing and Sally Field; 8-10 p.m., 102 Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building.

o March 29 - Feminist Activist Fair: Regional organizations serving women and girls will offer a glimpse of available resources as well as opportunities for involvement; noon to 2 p.m., North Mall, Webb Center.

o March 29 - Multicultural Book Club presentation, "Turnings: Writing on Women's Transformation": A discussion with the editors of and a contributor to this anthology, which explores the ways in which women deal with transformation publicly and privately (book is available in the University Bookstore). Anita Fellman, director of women's studies will serve as moderator. Panelists will include Old Dominion's Luisa Igloria, associate professor of English; Renee Olander, director of interdisciplinary studies; and Nancy Olthoff, director of disability services; 7 p.m. Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb Center.

o March 30 - "Play Like a Man. Win Like a Woman": This interactive and informative workshop led by Carlane Pittman, Ginger Ambler and Anne Arseneau of the College of William and Mary, will involve participants in lively discussion and situational activities that will examine the unwritten rules and roles of the modern workplace (what men may know about success that women need to learn). Based on the best-selling book by Gail Evans; 1-2 p.m., Suffolk Room, Webb Center. TOP
