Old Dominion's new-music ensemble, Creo, directed by Andrey Kasparov, will feature guest artist, trombonist Alain Trudel, in concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, in Chandler Recital Hall of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.
The recital with Trudel explores elements of Instrumental Theatre, a significant trend in which music is dramatized though nonmusical means, including acting, dancing, speech and film.
The concert, including works by 20th-century composers Berio, Kagel, MacManaman, Ovsepyan, Rozankovic, and Trudel, is free, but seating is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. Trudel is among the very few trombonists pursuing a career as an international soloist. He is the first brass player ever to win first prize in the Montreal Symphony Orchestra Soloist Competition, first prize in the Canadian International Stepping Stone Competition, the Mildred Dixon-Holmes Artist of the Year Award and the Virginia Parker Prize.
Trudel's performances as a soloist include appearances with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Ottawa's National Art Centre Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Austrian Radio Orchestra and Copenhagen's Tivoli Festival.
He also performed at the Musica Festival in Strasbourg, France, the Ijsbreker in Amsterdam and at the Carnegie-Weill Recital Hall in New York.
Creo was founded in 1998 by Kasparov, instructor of music, to perform the works of 20th-century composers, with emphasis on works composed after 1945. The name of the ensemble is derived from "creo," a Latin root for create and creative.
