Instructional documentation for a variety of topics is available electronically through the Office of Computing and Communications Services’ Web page at web.odu.edu/occs by selecting the Customer Services link. The OCCS documentation department is currently in the process of converting longer documents to PDF form for easier printing.
Lotus Notes DocumentationThere are two instructional manuals available for Lotus Notes, one for Combo account holders and one specifically for those with a Lotus Notes Browser-only account. The user guide for Lotus Notes Combo has been recently updated with additional information and a special section has been added dealing specifically with the account’s Internet-access feature. This Combo guide is provided in PDF format; the Browser guide will be converted to PDF in the near future.
Operating SystemsThree topics related to operating systems are currently available. Introduction to UNIX systems was developed to provide basic introductory information for new users of UNIX at Old Dominion, including obtaining an account, accessing UNIX systems and using Telnet and X Windows. A list of software available on the UNIX server “Norfolk” is also provided. “Managing Your H Drive” discusses management of individual H drive (server) space. Having large amounts of data stored in the H drive is a common cause of profile-related problems. The NT User Guide is a basic introduction to the use of the Windows NT operating system.
Special PurposeOCCS has also prepared instructional documentation to help faculty and staff better utilize the computing services available at the university. A user guide to centralized printing services, available in PDF format, includes step-by-step instructions for accessing and using centralized (high-speed, high-volume) printing services. The guide to “Targeting Your Large-Group Electronic Mail” is referenced in the new university policy on electronic mail. The guide includes specific protocols for targeting large-group e-mails and provides a list of groups currently available in the university address book. Use of these groups, which are created on a department or college basis, makes it easier to target messages to the smallest possible group of recipients.
Additional special-purpose documentation includes a guide for “Preparing Surplus Computers for Return to Property Control” and instructions for “Archiving Files to Recordable Compact Disks.”
