Norfolk Sports Club
names President Koch its
“Man of the Year”

The Norfolk Sports Club at its 54th annual Jamboree March 7 honored President James V. Koch as its Hampton Roads Man of the Year. More than 400 guests attended the event at the Sheraton-Waterside, where ESPN’s football analyst Lee Corso served as the guest speaker.

Koch received the Tom Ferguson Memorial Award for his commitment and leadership in intercollegiate athletics. Ferguson, a former local sportswriter, was one of the founders of the Sports Club and its annual awards program.

During the Koch presidency, Old Dominion teams have captured eight national championships and had 30 student-athletes named as Academic All-Americans. In addition, Koch was praised for his vision to construct a convocation center for the university.



Calling all volunteers
for Easter egg hunt

Volunteers are needed to help with the Alumni Association’s second annual Easter egg hunt on campus. Members of the campus community may sign up for any of the following activities: face painting, games, the egg hunt and registration.

Last year’s event was a huge success, with more than 500 children and their families participating. It is open to children (ages 1-8) of alumni, faculty, staff, students and families from area neighborhoods.

The hunt will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 22, at Powhatan Field. To volunteer call 683-3120.



Pianos for sale Fri., Sat.

Used pianos in good condition will be sold at a fraction of their retail value Friday, March 10, and Saturday, March 11, at the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.

Thanks to the music department’s partnership with Yamaha Corp. of America and Piano & Organ Warehouse of Virginia Beach, pianos that have been used by music students and faculty will be offered for sale and replaced on an annual basis by the two companies.

The pianos have been professionally maintained and most carry a new factory warranty. Financing and professional delivery are available.

The sale today runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and tomorrow’s sale, which is open to the general public, runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments are necessary for a private showing. Call 497-4406.



McDemmond to speak at
women’s studies dinner

Norfolk State University President Marie McDemmond will be the guest speaker for the Friends of Women’s Studies annual dinner at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, at Old Dominion. The dinner is open to the public.

Held each spring, the dinner encourages friendship and support beyond the campus community. McDemmond will give the keynote address, “Reflections of a Woman in Charge.”

A reception begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Hampton/Newport News Room of Webb Center. Tickets range from $12-$15 for the general public and are $6 for Old Dominion students. Reservations are required by Friday, March 24.

Graduate-student sisters
to give readings March 17

Two sisters who are graduate students in the creative writing program will read from their work Friday, March 17, at Prince Books in downtown Norfolk.

Patti Holt and Becki Hurst will both read fiction for the program, which is free and open to the public. The Prince Books cafe will be open for coffee and other beverages during the readings, scheduled for 7- 8 p.m.

Prince Books is located at 109 E. Main St.
