If your New Year's resolutions included shedding some unwanted pounds, you may want to check out the campus Weight Watchers group, which will begin meeting at noon Monday, Jan. 24, in the Richmond Room of Webb Center.
The group formed three years ago when an employee in the Darden College of Education found 15 people on campus who were interested in losing weight and starting an organization on campus.
Weight Watchers has always had the policy that if you could get at least 15 people to form a group, a Weight Watchers instructor would come to your workplace, according to Penny Craig-Pickel, associate director of the Career Management Center and a lifetime Weight Watchers member.
In just three years, more than 2,700 pounds have been shed by those involved in the campus Weight Watchers program. The group is led by Old Dominion alumna Beth Vinson, a Weight Watchers instructor. Vinson expects about 35 members to be involved this semester.
As part of a Weight Watchers membership, participants will receive weekly group support; assistance in determining a goal weight that is appropriate; and program materials which explain 1·2·3 Success®, the 10% differenceȘ and Weight Watchers Tools for Living, which teach how to maintain a positive mental attitude while trying to lose weight.
The program materials also include recipes and motivational tips, a POINTSfinder to calculate the POINTS® in favorite foods, a POINTSbooster to measure activity POINTS, weekly updating of participants' Membership Books with current weight and attendance, and awards that recognize weight loss achievements.
The cost of the 14-week session is $125. For more information call Vinson at 467-3723.
