Harvey Lindsay awarded honorary degree

Old Dominion awarded an honorary alumni degree June 24 to Harvey L. Lindsay Jr. of Norfolk in recognition of his work as co-chair of the Major Gifts Committee for the university's first capital campaign.

Lindsay, chairman and CEO of Harvey Lindsay Commercial Real Estate, played a significant role in the success of the Campaign for Old Dominion University, which recently surpassed its goal of $47.85 million, two years ahead of schedule. The campaign's Major Gifts division has raised nearly $20 million from individuals and families.

Former Alumni Association President Steven Winter presented the framed honorary degree to Lindsay during a program hosted by President James V. Koch and the capital campaign steering committee. Lindsay, a longtime supporter of the university, told the crowd assembled for the event, "I know how much Old Dominion means to this city and region. You have a wonderful school."

As part of the celebration, a curtain was unveiled to reveal the amount raised in the campaign to date, $47,923,564. President Koch thanked everyone involved for their "commitment, loyalty and generosity," and added, "I also like to think we've succeeded because we have a virtuous cause."
