Univ. Gallery sponsoring “Flashback” photo exhibit

Old Dominion’s University Gallery will open “Flashback,” an exhibition of photographs by Rodger Kingston and Jesse Nemerofsky, at Wonder Gallery, 259 Granby St. in Norfolk, at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4. The exhibition will continue through Dec. 19; it is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, or by appointment.

“Flashback” focuses on Kingston and Nemerofsky’s contemporary treatment of historical references. Comprising two bodies of work, the exhibition juxtaposes Kingston’s “50 Years on the Mangrove Coast,” 26 recent photographs documenting Florida’s Gulf Coast in the spirit and tradition of Walker Evans, with Nemerofsky’s “50/50,” 50 photographs from 50 trips to New York City in the genre of the New York School.

Kingston’s work describes the social changes on the West Coast of Florida during the last 50 years, mirroring Walker Evans’ work for Karl Bickel’s 1942 book, “The Mangrove Coast: The Story of the West Coast of Florida.”

Nemerofsky’s work utilizes the decisive moment style of photography, leaving the viewer to encounter a moment of contemplation and reflection based in social abstract commentary.

Nemerofsky and Kingston will give an informal discussion about the exhibit at noon Saturday, Dec. 12, at Wonder Gallery. Also, Old Dominion’s David Johnson and Tidewater Community College’s Ed Gibbs will give slide presentations on the historical references in the exhibition.
