to speak at meeting of
World Affairs Council
Bill Keller, managing editor of The New York Times, will address the World Affairs Council of Greater Hampton Roads Thursday, Sept. 17, in Webb Center. He will speak on "Covering a New World." The event is co-sponsored by The Virginian-Pilot.
The program will begin with a reception at 6:15 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 and the address at 8 p.m.
Keller was appointed managing editor of The New York Times last September. Previously, he served as chief of The Times bureau in Johannesburg and had been bureau chief in Moscow. He won a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the Soviet Union in 1989 and received the Best Foreign Correspondent award from the Washington Journalism Review in 1991. Before joining The Times, he had been a reporter for The Dallas Times Herald. He also was a reporter for the Congressional Quarterly Weekly Report in Washington.

The Office of Development recently received a $25,000 Capital Campaign gift from the Beazley Foundation for the William B. Spong Jr. Professorship endowment. The foundation last year contributed $50,000 for an electronic classroom in the Gornto TELETECHNET Center.
The development office also has received a cash and in-kind gift to the Annual Fund, valued at $1,500, from the new Sheraton Hotel Waterside.
The Department of Finance's Insurance and Financial Services Center will present a free seminar, "Protecting Assets Through Long-term Care, Insurance, Wills, Trusts and Estates," from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Sept. 15, in the Hampton/Newport News Room of Webb Center. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.
The program is designed to provide individuals with information that can be used to evaluate the many issues related to protecting assets. In particular, speakers will address what to look for in long-term care insurance and how to evaluate alternative programs in order to get the right policy to meet your needs.
Presenters will be Kevin Rack, an attorney with Huff, Poole and Mahoney, P.C., in Virginia Beach, who chairs the firm's trust and estates department, and Robert A. Gentry, who is affiliated with College Financial Services/Sun America Securities in Virginia Beach and has more than 20 years of experience in the financial services industry.

Town-N-Gown hosting membership reception
Town-N-Gown will hold a membership reception from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, in the River Rooms of Webb Center. Anyone interested is invited to attend and pick up a membership application.
A nonprofit organization that fosters a closer relationship among the community (Town), the National Defense Forces (N) and Old Dominion (Gown), Town-N-Gown plans monthly activities with the military and Old Dominion.
Members support the university in a number of ways, including acting as hosts and hostesses for families of incoming students during Preview and providing an annual student scholarship through the T-N-G Endowment Fund. Members also attend such campus events as the President's Lecture Series, musical and ballet programs, theatrical productions and Founders' Day. In addition, the organization sponsors occasional day tours to local attractions.

The Virginia Tidewater Consortium's Center for Effective Teaching will present workshops on Testing, Lecturing and Questioning Skills Friday and Saturday, Sept. 25 and 26, at the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center.
Robert Hanny, professor of education at the College of William and Mary, will lead the session on Testing on Friday afternoon. The Saturday sessions will cover Lecturing, presented by Lawrence G. Dotolo, president of the consortium, and Questioning Skills, by Anne Raymond-Savage, associate vice president for academic affairs. The workshops are scheduled for 1-4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. For the Saturday session, lunch is available for $5. To register call 683-3183 by Sept. 21.

speaker for 1st meeting of
Norfolk Round Table
The Norfolk Round Table speaker series continues next month when Carolyn Rhodes, professor emeritus of English and women's studies, will read selections of her poetry.
The reading and ensuing discussion are scheduled for 6-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, in the Hampton/Newport News Room of Webb Center. It is open to the public; participants are also invited to arrive at 5:30 p.m. for dinner. Meals may be brought to the room or purchased from the cafeteria.
The Norfolk Round Table will meet the first Monday of each month through May. Speakers will cover a variety of topics and issues. For more information call NRT president Shirley Sellers at 423-4326.
Winners of English
essay contest announced
Patti Holt and Jeffrey Pethybridge were announced recently as winners in Old Dominion's second annual English Undergraduate Literary Essay Contest.
Holt, currently a graduate student in the creative writing program, won first place and received a cash prize of $50 for her essay, "Daphnis and Chloe: Seeing Through Love." Pethybridge, a senior English major, placed second and received a gift certificate to a local book store for his essay, "Lolita at Play."
Their essays will be bound and kept on file in the English department.

Masters Swim Program
The university swimming coaching staff invites faculty and staff to take part in the Old Dominion Masters Swim Program, a series of free ongoing workouts for adults of all ages and abilities catered to the needs of the individual.
From now through Oct. 5, workouts are offered from 6:30-8:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 8-9:30 a.m. Sunday, at the H&PE pool.
After Oct. 5, the schedule is as follows: 6:30-8 a.m. Wednesday and Friday at the H&PE pool; 12:15-1:15 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at the Rollins Hall pool; 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the Rollins Hall pool; 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the H&PE pool; and 8-9:30 a.m. at the H&PE pool.
