Famed mezzo-soprano
Marilyn Horne to open
Diehn Concert Series

The F. Ludwig Diehn Concert Series will get off to an auspicious start this year when Marilyn Horne, world renowned mezzo-soprano, performs on campus Sept. 28.

One of the most honored vocalists ever to appear in the concert series, Horne is a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts' National Medal of Arts, was honored in Italy with the Premio D'ore as "the greatest female singer in the world" and was awarded the international Association of Opera Directors' Fidelio Gold Medal. She is the only living artist selected by Harold Schonberg for his New York Times list of the nine "all time, all-star singers in the MET's 100 years."

Horne will perform at 8 p.m. in Chandler Recital Hall of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center. The concert is free and open to the public; however, seating is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis.

Also scheduled to perform this fall are:

  • Oct. 19 - William De Rosa, one of the leading cellists of his generation.
  • Nov. 2 - Mark Murphy, jazz vocalist and six-time Grammy nominee, and the John Toomey Jazz Trio, led by Old Dominion's own renowned keyboardist.
  • Nov. 16 - Gateways Music Festival Chamber Ensemble, directed by Old Dominion's own violist Amadi Hummings.
