Clarke, Jurgens win TELETECHNET
teaching awards

Eva G. Clarke, a lecturer in psychology, and Jill C. Jurgens, assistant professor of educational leadership and counseling, were named TELETECHNET Faculty of the Year at the Faculty Awards and Retirement Dinner April 29.

The award, which includes a $500 cash bonus, recognizes outstanding faculty who teach televised courses to students at sites throughout the state and beyond via TELETECHNET. The selection process for the award is based largely on student evaluations.

Clarke earned her master's and bachelor's degrees from Old Dominion before joining the faculty ranks in 1992. The current academic year marked her first experience teaching via TELETECHNET, an interactive distance learning network linking Old Dominion to more than 50 satellite sites in Virginia and other states, including North Carolina, Washington, Indiana and Washington, D.C.

Clarke's abilities were commended by students in both her fall and spring classes, as well as by the site directors, classroom engineers, distance learning support staff and instructional designers. They praised her ability to promote student interaction and make the most effective use of classroom technology and illuminate complex issues for her students.

Jurgens joined the faculty in 1998 after earning her master's and doctorate from the University of Cincinnati and her bachelor's from Northern Kentucky University.

In her first TELETECHNET teaching foray, she was named by her students and the support staff as one of the network's top instructors. In particular, they commended her ability to foster interaction among students at all sites, for her intelligent use of the instructional media and her highly positive approach to teaching.
