honor latest Outstanding Scholars
Eight Old Dominion graduates were recognized as Outstanding Scholars during the Student Honors and Awards Banquet on May 6 and at their college commencement ceremonies May 8.
Brooke Maura Levine of Virginia Beach, a management information systems major in the College of Business and Public Administration, with a 4.0 cumulative GPA, was named the overall Outstanding University Scholar.
Levine, who was a Navy ROTC student, plans to attend flight school at the naval air station in Pensacola, Fla.
At the annual Student Honors and Awards Banquet May 6, the students were presented with silver bowls as recipients of the Alumni Association Outstanding Scholar Awards, given to the graduates with the highest grade point averages from each college. Also honored at the banquet were the Old Dominion faculty members who most inspired the award recipients.
The top scholars and their inspirational faculty members are:
Arts and Letters Two top scholars: Katherine M. Ottersten of Wayne, N.J., a history major with a 4.0 cumulative GPA; Qiu Jin, assistant professor of history and Elizabeth H. Esinhart, senior lecturer of political science and geography; and Christen DeGabrielle of Kitty Hawk, N.C., a criminal justice major with a 3.99 cumulative GPA; Elizabeth Esinhart.
Ottersten plans to attend Fordham University School of Law in New York City, and DeGabrielle plans to become a sales manager at an outdoor recreational store on the Outer Banks.
Business and Public Administration Two top scholars: Brooke Maura Levine of Virginia Beach, a management information systems major with a 4.0 cumulative GPA; Lt. Ron Marullo, assistant professor of naval science; and Eva M. Widhalm of Chesapeake, an information systems major with a 4.0 cumulative GPA; Jimmie L. Carraway, senior lecturer of information systems/decision sciences.
Education Katherine B. Seckler of Chesapeake, a double major in human services counseling and psychology with a 4.0 cumulative GPA; Lenora H. Thompson, associate director of counseling services. Seckler plans to pursue a master's degree in clinical social work.
Engineering and Technology John L. Hartline of Suffolk, an electrical engineering and technology major with a 4.0 cumulative GPA; John R. Hackworth, associate professor of engineering technology. Hartline plans to return to work full time as an engineer in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Health Sciences Alison Marie Booth of Portsmouth, a nursing major with a 3.99 cumulative GPA; Ann C. Campbell, lecturer of nursing. Booth plans to work at the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters and return to school for a master's degree.
Sciences Otey Anne Arnold of Portsmouth, a psychology major with a 4.0 cumulative GPA; Danielle McNamara, assistant professor of psychology. Arnold plans to return to Old Dominion for her master's degree in psychology.
