Janis V. Sanchez, professor of psychology, is the 1998-99 recipient of the University Women's Caucus Award for her "significant contributions to improving the situation of women at Old Dominion."
Sanchez was recognized at the Jan. 27 Women's Caucus awards luncheon.
"This award goes to a woman who has been part of the Old Dominion community for 20 years, and whose work for women extends not only across our campus, but also outside of it into our community and her discipline," said Mona Danner, president of the Women's Caucus and assistant professor of sociology and criminal justice.
"She is committed to teaching, to diversity and to advancing the interests of women, especially women of color."
Sanchez is a longtime member of the Women's Caucus, having served on various boards and committees. Several years ago, she co-chaired the Women's Caucus committee on racism. She is also a member of the executive board of the Institute for the Study of Minority Issues and a member and past president of the Coalition of Black Faculty and Administrators. She serves as a consultant and trainer on diversity for many public agencies in Hampton Roads.
In addition to the Women's Caucus award, Sanchez has received numerous other honors, including a Most Inspiring Professor Award, an Old Dominion University Annual Black Award for Outstanding Service in Teaching and the university's 1998 Tonelson Award.
