Old Dominion Seven faculty members have been awarded $5,000 each in this year's Summer Faculty Fellowship Program competition.
The grants provide funds to conduct research or creative projects for an eight-week period during the summer. The funds are generated by overhead dollars of grants and contracts managed through the Old Dominion University Research Foundation. The program provides the set stipend of $5,000 plus extra expenses of up to $1,000 for certain projects. "The quality of proposals submitted this year was quite high," said Robert L. Ash, associate vice president for academic affairs. "Since this program uses a selection process that approximates national grant competitions, we hope that the faculty members who have participated in the process feel that they have gained a better understanding of how to put together a competitive research proposal. We have already begun to work with a number of applicants to help them begin to develop research proposal submissions to agencies or foundations. "It is our hope that this relatively small number of awards is a temporary problem that will be overcome by increases in our research funding base. An important element of the Summer Faculty Fellowship Program is the sense of collegiality that occurs when funds generated in research areas which can attract external support are used to help our younger faculty become significant scholars in their own right. "Not only do many of them produce substantial returns on these investments, but virtually all of the recipients begin to develop their own distinctive research programs which represent the future strength of Old Dominion University."
